I’ve been a regular patron of Modaks over the last year or so popping in on every business trip down from Christchurch. Up until this morning my experiences have always been good. This morning, on arrival, I greeted the red-haired employee with a hello and in return got a snort of derision and disdain which immediately put me in a defensive mood. So not a good start. Then she botched the “bacon and poached eggs” order – I received bacon (with pigs black hairs still poking out) and scrambled eggs, and instead of brown toast received ciabatta which was no deal breaker as the friendly chap in the kitchen discussed the change before bringing the food out. So now I must admit I was annoyed: unfriendly, unhelpful service and my overly-”complicated” order botched. So when mentioning the order mistake to aforementioned red-haired waitress, imagine my surprise when I received a very surly “do you want a refund or what?” response. I’ll take a refund and go to The Strictly Coffee Company thank you! (no apology, no effort to reconcile issue: the chap in the kitchen, however, was friendly, helpful and sincere in his efforts… What a stark contrast between the two staff members) I won’t be going back.

I came here for lunch and my first thought was that there was a huge amount of choice. The brunch menu was available till 3 and there was also tapas, light meals and gourmet pizzas to choose from on top of the lunch menu. I picked the crispy chicken wrap while my friend chose the pasta of the day, which was a salmon and pine nut pasta. The food was cooked quickly, although we went at a very quiet time. My meal was good and my friend thoroughly enjoyed her pasta. The service was good. Overall a pleasant experience, I would definitely return!

One word sums the meals up: HUGE! We dropped in for a quick meal prior to a show at the Regent theatre which is virtually next door. My wife, who ordered blue cod and chips, was confronted with a trawler-load of beautiful fresh fish and enough chips to feed Ireland. My choice was pork ribs, and I’m sure the unfortunate pig had very few ribs left after providing my meal. Absolutely delicious, too. I like a big meal and I did, with difficulty, manage to demolish the ribs, but I left at least half the mountain of fries uneaten – a very rare occurence for me! Both meals were accompanied by a very attractive and tasty salad in a separate bowl. My only complaint is that due to the size of the meals, we had to rush through them in order to get to the theatre on time, but that was no reflection on the meal – it was a lack of judgment on our part. Friendly, courteous staff, too. Next time we’ll allow more time to enjoy, and there WILL be a next time.

This is the best eatery and coffee in town at the moment, i love my morning cappuccino there and have eaten the chowder (the best in the world in my opinion), the lamb shanks (awesome) husband has had steak (he rated this high) and the Chocolate to Die for cake. The service is excellent. Worth the visit :)

I was really pleased to find a place which offers so many gluten free options as I have quite a bad case of coeliacs disease. The first time I went here, I had a salad which was labeled GF and I also asked at the counter to double-check, it was. But had such a severe reaction. I gave it another chance and when I double-checked that what I was having was gluten free I got a very rude answer of “well that’s what it says”. Yet again had an awful reaction. I am never going back, and it is unfair for them to label things GF which are not GF. I also had a friend get something vegan, which they served with cheese.

This is definitely my fave place to go for coffee. Love the decor and intimate feel to the place. Free arcade games at the back definitelty a win! Must try the cinnamon pinwheels and wedges.

Ate here and had a really bad lunch. Advised the owner who refunded us the price we had paid and was very apologetic. So my partner and I decided to give it another try and see whether this was just a one off. Second lunch we had was great. Balmac burger was really nice as was my partners steak. The chips which had been under cooked last time were perfect and our cokes instead of being from large plastic bottles were from small glass bottles. Its obvious the owner took on board what we found lacking from our previous meal and made changes which is great to see. Food was so much better the second time around that I would not hesitate to keep coming back! Well done No.7!!
