Service and the steaks were average. My madagascar steak looked like a few chucks of meat drenched with chili flavoured crushed tomato and due to the uneven cut of the meat, some part was well done, another was medium and the other was rare (3 in 1 within the same steak, mite b a deal to some). My partner ordered beef terayaki, nicely done although the waiter forgot to put 3 more pieces of the cut up steak on the plate, thus looked like kids portion of meat initially (u can count the number of the little meat cubes with one hand). He was given the other 3 pieces when he went to the salad bar to get more salad and the cook noticed the left over meat was still sitting on the bench. Salad bar was a bit suspicious. Watery curry eggs but tasted alright. Glad that we bought the meal with more than 50% discount voucher. This visit reminds me why we never been back to this place after our 1st visit more than 4 years ago.

We had a meal at Customhouse recently and were extremely diappointed with the very poor attitude and service of the staff. When we were shown to our table, the girl more or less pointed at the table and left us. A young male served us and seemed rushed. He was not able to tell us about the menu meals…telling us he was new. One of us ordered flounder and we were then told flounder had run out. When ordering a sticky date pudding with icecream, he came back to ask if we would mind having sorbet with it instead of icecream as they had run out of icecream!!! (What restaurant runs out of something so basic). We said not to worry we would just have coffee. This was served with no sugar and when we requested some the girl said yes…but you guessed it, it just NEVER arrived. We mentioned this when paying our bill…no apology, nothing. We will not return for a meal here again.

Just a quick note to thank Plato for providing a benchmark standard when it comes to service. Last night we were given some of the warmest and accommodating service I’ve experienced. Thank you for your professionalism and flexibility. P.S Your food was also very good!!

We used to dine at Lone Star often as it is such a fab family restaurant. As usual the floor manager is great, and the rest of the waitresses friendly. I was a little disappointed with the quality of the meals the last time we visited. My Dixie chicken was tasteless, the steak was tough and the lamb specials were on the small side. Please Lone Star lift your game!

I visited this restaurant for the first time with my parents in April 2012. We had a combination of steaks and seafood, which were all perfectly cooked. The “shrimp cocktail” with thousand island dressing like the way it used to be made was a real treat. The steaks were juicy and tender. There was also the added bonus of a salad bar with a wide range of fresh options, including a signature-dish banana side that my mother found particularly delicious. What was especially enjoyable about the Huntsman was the outstanding service. We were welcomed on arrival by Geoff, who after seating us and providing our menus, explained the specials of the day and then invited us to consider them and the regular mains before returning in good time. He also invited us to help ourselves to salads while we choose our entrees. On his return he took our orders for drinks. I drink very little and on that night decided not to drink anything, but my parents both decided to accompany their meals with various local wines and beers. Geoff was able to explain and recommend various options to my parents with a great deal of local knowledge. He then returned with two very generous glasses of central Otago pinot gris. After our tasty entrees, our mains arrived which we added even more salad too. All the while Geoff was managing the very busy restaurant dining room in a calm, professional and welcoming way. I highly recommend the Huntsman Steakhouse, it’s excellent.

Lunchtimes 12-2pm Tue-Sun (Note: NOT Mondays) – roast beef or pork, $9.90/$12.50 small/large. Excellent meal, 6! vegetables, and all piping hot – even the carrots were still hot after 5 minutes.. in most places they seem to cool very quickly. This place is very neat and tidy from top to bottom, including the service. I get the feeling they “care”. :) Oh, and daily Blackboard Specials saw me trying the Brandy Snaps and Fruit Salad. Just $5, and had to be seen – and tasted! – to be believed. Divine!

Not too bad of a spot. Decent without being great. Bit like a Lone Star I guess or a better than your local pub meal, but then the price is quite a bit more hefty as well. Lots of TVs everywhere, not everyones cup of tea.

Decent enough seafood spot. Not amazing but good enough & it doesn’t cost a whole lot. Ive usually been pretty happy with the meals I have received here. Funny thing I’m reading in these reviews is from people who went to the Sea Food restaurant and ordered a steak! There are certainly better places to get a steak, but its not bad for sea food!

Was recommended this restaurant by a friend, it’s about a 20 minute drive or 25 minute from the city on the bus. We booked a table, and were given a window seat which looked over the harbour and the city, was a beautiful view. The waitresses were very helpful, it was very busy, but they always had a smile and were pleasant to us. The food was lovely and very well presented. Even though it was busy there was a good buzz and atmosphere to the restaurant which meant we left happy with the service and the food, will defiantly be back again.

What a turnaround! LAST time I was here I was the only diner, staff seemed to resent me, the food was just “ok”, and the whole atmosphere was seedy (it used to be locally known as The Gluepot). But – that was 15 years ago! Today I tried again – and after careful consideration had to give 5 stars. Reasons: ***Atmosphere: Small separate dining room is cosy (with a lovely real-looking fire) yet for warm days has 2 doors opening straight onto the patio. Tables/chairs/cutlery all great. Comfortable for those who like to eat outside too. ***Waitress: Her blonde ponytail constantly glided from table to table as she seemed to treat every table with total dedication. I felt like a “person” rather than just another diner”. She was never TOO attentive, yet always there for whatever one might want. ***Oh, yes, the Food!?: Well, for a reasonable $10 the lunchtime roast beef was all class – attractively presented, with an interesting choice of vegetables. . . I’ll Be Back! :-)

I’ve been a few times for their lunchtime roasts (just Wed/Thu/Fri??) – reasonable price, good service, good food, and pleasant atmosphere inside OR outside on sunny days.

Their website confirmed special Roast on Fridays 12-2. . . Well, we arrived at 1:35 to find a “Roast sold out” notice. They sure didn’t look “busy” at the time – MAYBE this was a one-off, but I’m not going back to find out. Grrrrrr

I went at lunchtime and was shown a menu. Only LATER after my meal did I happen to notice another menu tucked away somewhere offering pensioner specials. Yes, I think I look like an obvious ‘pensioner’! Oh well…… anyway, the food was great, and dining out on the deck, with a view of distant sea, was pleasant. :-)

Great food . . . though a couple of lunchtimes I’ve been there it was pretty full, and so a bit noisy.

Over the years I’ve been here in evenings – good food nicely presented, and also at lunchtimes – food is fair though veggies somewhat overcooked often. Lunch special (roast) was $9.90 till early 2012 – now $11.50, still good value.

I’ve been here a few times, purely for dining – and find the food quality and presentation is great. Also very moderately priced ($10-$20 lunchtime?). . . . The selection’s not great though. . . . And the highlight for me – the most magnificent cutlery I’ve ever seen anywhere! Honest, I HATE dirty knives, and forks with bent prongs, or maybe too small to fit my hand.

I only went there once, a lunchtime in middle of 2011. Chose a seat, sat, waited. Waitress came delivering food to next table, but seemed to have no interest in me – I was waiting for her to turn and address me, but no. After waiting at least 10min – I left. :-[

Visited weekday lunchtime for $9.90 special roast (winter only?). . . . Food was fine, service a little slow, atmosphere pleasant. Cutlery very nice!
