26/05/2012Very well priced, excellent flavours and variety, excellent service, all you can ask for. If you’re thinking about trying La Casa Mexicana or The Mexican it’s like comparing eating something from the freezer at the supermarket to eating something cooked with flair and passion. It’s night and day. The Mexican rules!

25/05/2012Love the retro style, heaps of room, loads of parking space. Not so enamored of the food. Over priced and not great quality. I use to stop in regularly to support this business venture on the way to taupo and it made a great meeting spot to catch up with reps and friends but the quality of the food kept falling. The cakes and slices are really very good, what mum use to bake but the hot food left alot to be desired. I will go back to meeting there when they stop cutting corners on quality.

25/05/2012For NZ this is a good change of pace. Nice Mexican, good staff and not badly priced, you could do so much worse for a good night out. This is still not truly great Mexican, rotorua is lucky to have this restaurant, but when you step of the main dishes the quality and knowledge of the chef drops. Was very happy with the Fajitas I’ve had there and the orange and almond cake is very yummy while the tortilla soup was very fatty and heavy. A mixed bag.

22/05/2012incredible pizza, omg!! hard enough to find pizza like this in a big city, but to get it in little old Rotorua wow! Not only is the place the right kind of cool, the owners are filled with smiled and didn’t mind our two kids banging on their piano (luckily there were no other customers around!) YOU MUST try and then you’ll need no other type of convincing!

21/05/2012Atmosphere aside, the food is disappointing. It is flavorless and overpriced. The meat mixture was precooked and then microwaved to within an inch of its life. Thrown onto cold soft tacos with lettuce, coriander and cheese and served with microwaved re-fried beans and rice. Just because one can put on a chefs jacket does not make one a chef or even a cook in this case. Could it get any worse? Probably – but we are not going back to find out.

20/05/2012Luvlly jubbly! Oh what a joy, finally after many years of searching we found an Indian restaurant in New Zealand that comes up to anywhere near as good as any in the UK. The chicken balti was pure heaven, with no scrappy bits of gristle and bones. The food and service was fabulous.

13/05/2012Very disappointing…. we have eaten at many Indian restaurants around NZ and Lovely India is definitely the worst…..the prices are over inflated and we were even going to be charged for the rice with the main meals…I have never been to a Indian restaurant and been asked to pay for the rice to accompany the main meal…..when we challenged this the waiter then wanted to make a deal and not charge us for the rice!!!!!!! you make deals on buying cars not your dinner ……hence to say we cancelled our order and left…… there are better Indian restaurants in Rotorua I would suggest that you bypass this one.

13/05/2012This was one of the most disappointing eating experiences you could imagine. I love Mexican food and this restaurant has it wrong on so many levels. Firstly the restaurant is sparse with less atmosphere than a school cafeteria. The service was pathetic. The tables were bare (as in completely bare) and you could clearly see the smears of cleaning solution on the wood surface. These issues all pale into insignificance compared to the quality of the food and the price. There was little authenticity, the food was tasteless, bland and stodgy. When I opened my burrito to check the quality of the meat I found a twistie tie (the metal kind) in the meat mixture. My wife’s dinner was no better aside from the lack of foreign objects. All this with mains averaging in the mid $20 range = awful food, terrible atmosphere, awful service. As an aside why serve milkshakes? Wrong Wrong Wrong. Subsequently we decided to try “The Mexican” across town. If you’re thinking about trying La Casa Mexicana or The Mexican it’s like comparing eating something from the freezer at the supermarket to eating something cooked with flair and passion. It’s night and day. The Mexican rules!

07/05/2012What a disaster, went to Breakers on April 27th, we were new to town and thought it looked like a nice easy, friendly menu place. 1 hr and 20 mins later only 2 out of the 8 from out table had received meals. Went up twice to complain, told will be ready in ten mins(which they said twice). Just as we all stood up to leave and demand a refund out come meals, looked like they had been slapped on the plate. I wanted everyone to leave there and then and demand money back. Others decided to just eat as they were starving. Hubby sat down to a roast pork meal he had been longing for all day. Totally disgusting, a big plop and that’s what it looked like of mash spud which was bearly warm, roast pork with soft crackle and a sad looking salad. He tried to eat it and gave up half way. I was so angry I took the plate back and complained, got his money back and wish the others had done the same. Sorry Breakers big thumbs down from us and we have told everyone we know NOT going to your restaurant. A downer to what was otherwise a lovely weekend in a beautiful city.

05/05/2012Ate here this evening while passing through Rotorua on the way back to Auckland. I ordered the Venison and hubby the gnocchi. We waited a good 25 minutes for the main to turn up. My venison was $38.00 but what was on the plate (though attractively presented) did not seem to be good value. Hubby’s gnocchi was a generous serving at least. The plates were warm, which was great. My venison was obviously cooked for a long time on one side. It was quite well done and a bit chewy on one side, and the other was beautifully medium rare as had been requested. The sauce was delicious and really enhanced the dish, and the lovely smoky flavour was beautiful. No complaints at all about the taste. My meal came with pak choy, kumara (a square around 5cm x 5cm) and a strange duck liver sausage thing that had tiny shrimps inside. I didn’t care for the sausage thing at all and left it on the plate. The gnocchi became quite goopy and paste-like rather than bathing in a delicious sauce once the plate cooled down a little. A shame, but apparently it was nicely flavoured. I was still hungry after my dinner, so we ordered a fondue to share. It took about 30 minutes to get to the table, which we thought was an unacceptably long time, as we watched the minutes ticking by and wondered when we would finally get back to Auckland. A young couple had arrived before our mains arrived, and we noticed that they did not receive their meals until just a few minutes before our dessert turned up. That would have been around 45 minutes to an hour waiting for their meal. Once again, an unacceptably long time to wait for a meal. The dessert was large, and the chocolate was very nice, although a bit thin, so it was a challenge eating it without dripping chocolate all over the table cloth and ourselves. It came with lots of marshmallows, some chunks of apple, rock melon, some rectangles of sponge cake (broke into the fondue when dipped), and grapes. The fruit was fridge-cold and I feel it would have benefited from being left at room temperature. It was quite an assault on my sensitive teeth to eat very cold fruit with warm chocolate sauce. The service was fine (apart from the obvious lack of service during the wait). We had a South African lady waiting on us and she was very pleasant. We had been seated right between the bar area and the restaurant, and there was a concertina door in the bar that was open when we arrived. It was very cold, with a significant draft coming through the doors straight towards us. After shivering for 15 minutes or so we got up ourselves to shut the door. Not sure if the staff was aware of the discomfort it had been causing. Although the food was very nice, it was pricey and we waited far too long for it. The restaurant was not overly busy, there were plenty of tables empty, so I am at a loss to understand why things were so delayed. I wouldn’t be in a hurry to go back again.

03/05/2012We recently ate here but were very disappointed with range offered for a Saturday night buffet. Many of the platters were empty and not being refilled, and it was only 7.30pm. It took nearly 1/2 an hour to be seen by the drinks waiter and then about 15mins to get drinks. And it wasn’t very busy. My daugther enjoyed the mussels and there was a good variety for desert. Hopefully it isn’t always this way, but disappointing for a first visit there.

28/04/2012It is hard to believe that some of the reviews are about the same restaurant that we had dinner at last evening. We were absolutely delighted with every dish – in fact we asked the waitress to compliment the chef and tell him that his food presentation and content was far superior than on “The Queen Mary” where we have spent the last four weeks. Yes, we will certainly be dining at this restaurant on our return to Rotorua

28/04/2012While on a mini holiday to Rotorua on Anzac day we dined here …oh boy…the food was fantastic as usual of any Burgerfuel joint – but probably it was their warm welcome and friendly nature that set them a class apart…Well done ‘RYAN’ …you simply stole our hearts with your warmth…much appreciated…thanks….Bernice & Mahesh
