21/05/2012Three of us lunched at the Hippopotamus Restaurant and were delighted with the atmosphere, the service and the food. It was a special occasion and we loved every minute of it. In fact we recommended it to friends who have already made a booking

19/05/2012How to say? This is just BAD! I went there in the afternoon to have a lunch, coffee and pastries. It was so disappointed for me as I am french. The service is poor (people are not smiling) and the food taste like NOTHING good. I had a veg pie and it was disgusting. The pastries were average, nothing special. And the baguette sorry again but bad tasting. This not the bread I know from France for sure. The coffee was ok though. One advice if you really want to taste something good about french food go somewhere else or just go to France.

19/05/2012Had a great experience . The food was excellent and well priced. Its worth having the extra veg as tonight silver beet was featured ( not just ordinary green from the silver beet – the whites with an amazing sauce of cream, parmigiana and other spices, it was Divine and just an add on) Our Waitress was lovely and helpful. The wine list is rather short, but not the usual run of the mill supermarket, so fine. Featured a couple of French wines by the glass. This is not a fine Dinning Restaurant and the prices reflect that, but the service is great and the food very tasty and well presented. It was refreshing to have a Salad that was correctly seasoned and tossed – not just placed on the plate and drizzles with dressing. Thanks for a great night.

09/05/2012I went there with a close friend 3 weeks ago and discovered that they serve foie gras, as people outside were handing out leaflets about it. Now that I understand the awful cruelty in its production I will not be returning to Le Canard until they remove it from the menu.

04/05/2012I have to warn people that Aubergine is WAY overpriced for what you will receive. The food isn’t terrible, but it is NOT the quality bistro experience you might expect. As someone else wrote, the menu sounds nice, but what you get is strange and slightly off. First oddity–for a fancy, “fine-dining” experience, the one waitress was wearing a hoodie, jeans, and sneaks. I don’t usually care about stuff like that, but it was strange. We shared one entree–the warm goat cheese crostini with smoked tomatoes and salad. The bread was nicely grilled, but otherwise it came with a block of sweating cheap cheese and four tiny dollops of what seemed like store-bought relish. We also had the chicken sausage and salmon mains. On the menu, they sound like two very distinct dishes. What we got were two different types of protein sitting on the same soup of canned cannellini beans, carrots, and celery except one was a bit more tomatoey. Although the salmon was tasty, the soupy bean base was bland and confusing and did nothing for either dish. We also got the “seasonal vegetables” which were cafeteria-style steamed broccoli, carrots, and cauliflower. Finally, the desserts were decent but at $16 a pop, I expected amazing. I had the jasmine tea creme brulee–which was really lovely, but it came with a dollop of neon, bubblegum-green lime sorbet that was obviously store bought and awful! The intensity of the fake lime flavour completely killed the subtlety of the jasmine and I found that I had to stop eating it because my taste buds were freaking out. Honestly, I have had better pub food. You won’t have a horrible meal here, but for the money, you can do much much better.

29/04/2012Went to Le Metrppolitain for brunch this weekend. Ordered the scrambled eggs, salmon and watercress on a croissant. The eggs were delicious, perhaps the best I’ve ever had. Croissant was soft and buttery. My companions also enjoyed their meals although the French toast with bacon was quite small. I had to remind the waitress about my french fries as they hadn’t arrived by the time we all finished our meals. Once I asked they quickly came out though.
