Dunk Cafe

Cuisine: European, Cafe, Breakfast, British

Came here with Dad for a simple, quick brunch. I ordered the Porridge with banana and brown sugar, while he went for the bacon and eggs.
He enjoyed his meal, however I felt the porridge wasn’t quite satisfying enough. It was somewhat lacking in flavour and sweetness.
The coffee wasn’t hot and robust enough for my liking.
However, on the upside, the prices were very decent for Parnell, and the service was friendly and prompt.

Robert Harris Cafe

Cuisine: Cafe, A La Carte, Breakfast

Came here with my mother and friend for a morning tea.
The staff seemed to act okay around customers but were rude to another staff member. This is totally inappropriate and unprofessional. I felt sorry for this particular girl who was actually nice.
Coffee was okay but not the best I’ve had.

Great coffee, food and service! The only downside is that it’s quite dark and small inside, and could do with some light and space. But hey, that’s me being fussy.
Otherwise I am always very happy when visiting The Med!!!

Starbucks Coffee

Cuisine: Cafe

I came here recently to see if there was any difference in coffee between the Tauranga chain and if the Mount Maunganui.
I was really disappointed sorry to say. I ordered the usual Cappuccino, and the taste and texture was just not there. Practically NO milk froth, which defeats the purpose of a cappuccino (1/3 milk froth!) and it was just weak and watery.
Won’t be coming back.

Starbucks Coffee

Cuisine: Cafe

I like full-bodied, strong, creamy coffee and Starbucks hot beverages just don’t hit the spot.
Also something that bugs me (and I’m pretty sure it’s not the Baristas) is the consistency of milk froth. It’s ALWAYS bubbly and it should be thick, foamy and creamy. Maybe it’s just me, but I always experience this.

However, big ups for the Frappuccinos which is the only thing that brings me to Starbucks these days.

Cafe 88

Came here with a friend not so long ago for afternoon tea. The cakes were amazing and the coffee was fairly good, but definitely not the best I’ve had. They use Gravity which I’m not a fan of.
At 4.30 we were told to start heading out soon (?!) as they were about to close. The girls there were a little rude about it but oh well.
Not too fussed about this place due to the service but I’d come back for the food.

Went here three days in a row for sushi because it was just amazing the first time! Some pieces are only $1 so great value compared to a lot of sushi places. The staff are Japanese too so I converse with them every now and then!!! Love this place. 5 out of 5!

Takara Japanese Restaurant

Cuisine: Japanese, Asian

I often go to Takara with my family and Japanese friends for both lunch and dinner. Great service, and not to mention food! Delicious, fresh authentic Japanese food with a variety of flavours. The sushi here is premium – the freshest in Tauranga in my opinion, as they make it to order. My favourite meals are the sashimi, unagi-don, teriyaki chicken and green tea ice cream (which I thought would be incredibly strange but proved to be sweet creamy and just amazing!) great service – fast and friendly. Food is absolutely great (menus are a little pricey, but very filling and worth it). The busiest times are Saturday lunchtimes and dinners (around 7pm onwards). Will keep coming here for great Japanese food!

Mundo Mexicano

Cuisine: Mexican

Family and I were looking for a casual place to have dinner, and found the perfect place. It feels and looks just like a little Mexican shop-come-cafe. Colourful and unique, just like the shops over there are. If I were to be fussy I would say it look longer that usual to get our menus and for the food to arrive, but that didn’t worry us.
Most of the meals were much of the same thing (the tortilla wraps) but they had different styles and fillings which was great. I had quesadillas and it was delicious! Everyone else enjoyed there food as well. Overall: great service, foood and atmosphere.

Volantis Restaurant & Cafe - CLOSED

Cuisine: European, Cafe, Pacific, International

Went here a few years ago and loved it, so last week we decided to go for a dinner. Meals were delicious, and massive! The gourmet burgers are a must-try, they are great combinations like apricot/Camembert chicken, bacon avocado and chicken etc. We enjoyed looking at all the artwork (fishes) on the walls, which are amazing.

The only two complaints I would have to make would be the ceiling that needs cleaning, and the service. The waitress did not smile once while we were there and I noticed she was like that with everyone. She flatly said “have a good evening” when we left but did NOT seem like a happy woman – a bit of a put-off, sadly.

Food was well presented and delicious, but disappointing that we had to deal with flies that seemed to be everywhere from the furnishings to the (very unfortunately) tables. It was very bothersome while we ate. It made me wonder how clean the tables were.

Tokyo Sushi

Cuisine: Japanese

Wow, I have had sushi from just about every place in Tauranga that sells it, but I have to say Toyko sushi is by FAR the best place. The rice is perfectly cooked, unlike many sushi places these days. The fillings (there is a big range) are delicious and there is a lot of filling in there. All the sushi tastes/smells fresh. The staff are so friendly and are qualified sushi chefs which have done food handling and hygiene papers.
There is just nothing wrong with this place! If you’re ever in Greerton, I absolutely recommend going here.

Yoku Japanese Cafe

Absolutely prime. I’ve loved this sushi place from the first time I got sushi here. A variety of sushi, from the average rolled (maki) sushi to nigiri (rice mould with something on the top, usually fish or meat) and some delicious potato croquettes/deep fried rice balls which are becoming more and more popular with us kiwis.
Whenever I’m getting lunch in town, Yoku sushi is the first place that comes to mind!

Firstly, I have to say they have tons to choose from! Seriously – the largest range and amount of sushi packs I’ve ever seen from somewhere in NZ. The sushi is great, and very tasty. All ingredients are fresh, and of course the sushi is made fresh as you can see when you go in. A little high priced compared to the usual sushi place, but certainly worth it.

Only been here once, but the food is so delicious and authentic! I ordered a Salmon salad, and the dressing was just delicious! Very traditional and tangy. The service is great and nice atmosphere. They also do takeaway/choose-your-own sushi during the day, which is handy too. Will definitely come again.

Always great sushi every time! Whenever I come to this area of the Mount, I always get sushi from here! The “Bay Sushi” just down the road is dry, usually quite tasteless and warm! Yuck! (They have their sushi exposed to the air too). Anyway, Sushi Heaven has a great range of many different flavours, plus the staff are very friendly too.

Boulevard Restaurant

A great little restaurant with friendly staff and always delicious food! Plus very handy being on the main road. It’s joined to the Boulevard motel which is a great place to stay – all the facilities you have in every other motel as well as spa baths, a heated swimming pool, etc. It’s actually so nice to wake up in the morning and casually walk a few metres (literally) over to the restaurant for a delicious breakfast – from crunchy muesli and fruit, to scrambled eggs and tomato, to a full-on big breakfast. Great complex (:

Breakers Cafe & Bar

Cuisine: New Zealand, Burgers, Cafe, Family

I think Breakers is more of a relaxed/casual, family type of restaurant. That’s in a good way though – if you aren’t too fussy about etiquette. The service is always nice, it has a great atmosphere and the the menu slightly resembles a Hawaiian-beach style surf shack cafe. Which is great for those days you aren’t dressed up fancy and just want a good relaxed meal.

Tran Lunch Bar Cafe

Cuisine: Cafe

Popped in here after walking up and down Church street for a while, looking for a decent-looking cafe, and this place was perfect. The guy that served us was incredible friendly and outgoing, asking how we are, etc. We ordered two lattes and had a look at all the yummy treats they had. A majority of their food products were low fat, gluten free and healthy which is important. We ended up choosing the German Poppy Seed Cake, which we were very intrigued about. The same guy noted it was a good choice as that’s one of his favourites. Got our coffees and cake almost immediately! The coffee was just over average – we both found they were not hot enough, which is a turn off ):
However, the Poppy seed cake was unusually delicious (if that even makes sense) and it had a really great texture to it. It was a thin layer of short pastry on the bottom, a thick layer of some custard and poppy seed creamy mixture, then topped with crumble. Anyway, I definitely recommend coming here, particularly for the delicious treats they have!

SAAJ Indian Cuisine

Cuisine: Indian

Definitely one of the best Indian eateries/takeaway places in the Bay. A great range of meals that always come with rice, plus a good range of vegetarian as well. A little disappointed by the fact that some of the vegetable kormas/curries don’t have a good variety of vegetables in them, and they appear to be merely veges from the frozen packs. I hope they realise that they should add some extra (more interesting) Indian-style vegetables in here.

Summer Sands Lounge & Dining

Cuisine: A La Carte, European, Pizza, Seafood

My hungry family and I were in need of a filling and inexpensive lunch after having a soak at the Mount hot pools. Summer Sands was probably one of our first choices as we saw the meals/food were very good value for money. We got the Breakfast-Lunch specials which were a breakfast meal + drink of choice for $10, or the Lunch menu (same deal but larger and more range)for $15. Everything on the menu looked delicious, there was a good range from pumpkin and spinach omelets to kids meals, to simply a good kiwi Big Breakfast.
The service was great – we were seated straight away and got our food and drinks 5-10 minutes after ordering. The waitresses were lovely and very friendly, asking how we were and how our swim was, and so forth.
We all thoroughly enjoyed everything. There wasn’t anything wrong with our meals, the service or the upkeep of the cafe. Both the inside and outside were clean, spacious and had nice tables and chairs. If I were to be fussy, I would say the restrooms were not too amazingly clean, to be honest it is fairly common in a majority of cafes.
I would definitely recommend going to Summer Sands.

BurgerFuel

The food is just perfectly delicious, considering it is a fast food place. However, since it *is* a fast food place, it is a bit too overpriced. I’m just saying that for a lot cheaper, you can get a meal from somewhere like Burger King, that tastes very close to what Burger Fuel meals are like, for a fraction of the price. Though, they do have some great combination’s. For example, the fries are thick and served with garlic aoli.. Far more original than soggy shoestring fries with a (extra cost packet of ketchup from McD’s. I’d go here more often if money wasn’t a worry.

Well it’s definitely not a restaurant or too gourmet, but it is very good value for money. Very good variety, plus we’ve had no issues over orders or anything (as you sometimes do with these sort of places).

My family and I went here one Saturday and it was fairly busy, but we got a good seat. The meals were all delicious – no complaints – and they had some lovely variety from pastas to salads. The only thing I could note would be that the lighting was very dim and it wsa a bit difficult to read the menus/see our food.
However, that isn’t a big deal. Lovely authentic Italian restaurant.

Amphora on the Strand

Cuisine: Cafe, Mediterranean, Italian, A La Carte

Okay, the food here is great and there is good variety, but I was extremely put off by some of the staffs’ attitude. I could see many people arriving and standing there for way too long with no one coming to seat them or help them.
One waitress who took the orders treated the other staff with no respect whatsoever, never seemed happy doing her job and was dressed very tacky – inappropriate. Someone came up to her to question about the drinks and she literally huffed and walked away, getting someone else to see to that person.
The kitchen staff, whom we could see constantly from the bar (very open) were cursing at each other and arguing. I understand it must get a little stressful whilst working in a kitchen in a hurry, but to be visible to all the diners isn’t a good look.

I did not enjoy my experience here and despite the nice food, I will not come back here ever again.

Probably the best quality and taste for fast food places, but I think it’s a little overrated. The reason being, is even though the food is great, it is too overpriced. Most of the burgers are around $8-9 each when they should be down a little, around $5 each. Great to go there occasionally however.

Cafe Versailles

My family and I went here for my birthday dinner and I am greatly pleased to say it did everything to impress us. The staff were friendly and so welcoming, the atmosphere definitely had a French feel about it, and most importantly the food was divine. Everything on the menu – starters, entrees, mains and desserts – were all very French-influenced, and tasted beautiful. The host/cooks even made lemon tarts (tarte au citron I’m sure) with a vanilla/chocolate sauce, with a birthday candle on mine, and we were so greatful about their effort. To top that off, we had beautiful piano playing and singing in the background, by the waitress. We left with full (in a nice way)stomachs and big smiles.
Absolutely no complaints – We are surely coming here again. Bravo!
