Catalina Cafe

Cuisine: Family, Cafe, Ice Cream / Gelato

This place has the feeling that it could be fantastic, open, airy with lots of outside seating and parking. All this along with an attractive menu and cabinet food.

While the coffee is great both dishes we had were very bland. We had the chicken sandwich from the cabinet and the risotto balls. Neither had any real taste and did not standout. I think the chef needs to taste the food more.

Not worth traveling any distance to find, however driving around the old base is interesting.

Blunderbuss Pizza + Vino

Cuisine: Italian, Pizza

A very tried and true formula that suits a casual Friday night dinner after a few works drinks.

The service started well but dropped off during the night after we had ordered. Getting a coffee required a trip to the bar. However they did work hard to fit us in and fine seats.

The crispy squid and polenta chips did not disappoint and the pick of the pizza for us was the duck.

The menu pricing is very reasonable.

Worth a try if you are in the area.

Nice cafe let down by poor service on a morning that was quiet with only a few customers. We were just forgotten about which is a pity, as the seating environment is one of the nicest in Parnell with the option of couches out the back.

Both the coffee and my poach eggs where great.

Might give it another chance.

A view to die for and a wine list that would be hard to beat if you are into Mt Difficulty wines. If you can handle the weather, sit outside with a wine and the soup of the day along with a shared Mt Difficulty platter.

Good service matched with simple good food.

A must visit even if it is only for the view.

Hard to beat the location with a small dinning room with a view out across the lake. Very much the private hotel dinning room with open fire.

All the standards are on the menu and just because we could, a glass of bubbles with breakfast was our option. Home made jams and the two egg omelet hit the spot.

Take your paper and take your time.

Breakfast for us started with the La Complete crepe’, which being made with buckwheat it was a bit different from the standard crepe’. Not sure it is too much more healthier but it made us feel better.

The service was good and the coffee was some of the best we had tasted in the region. Wrap-up as there is the option to sit outside.

Worth a try if you are look for something different.

A very welcoming atmosphere with rather average food.

Our soup starter lacked any tasty which is hard for a blue cheese soup. The pizza we shared was ok but nothing special. Feels like a place surviving on the past.

If you have to have something with your beer stick to the pizza.

Since there is lots of choice around we wont be heading back.

Great hotel with a great café. The service was super quick and there is a wide range of offerings for breakfast. We also got some complementally breads and muffins with our omelettes.

All food was fresh, tasty and well presented with good coffee.

Fantastic service, warm fire, trust the chef and a bottle of their RKV 2008 Pinot Noir summed the place up for us. If warm enough, it is a great location to sit outside and have a few wines in the country air.

The best part of having trust the chef is not knowing what is going to turn up at the table. If you do want the pork however whisper in the waiters hear.

We will be heading back.

Rata Dining - Josh Emett

Cuisine: New Zealand, A La Carte

Expectations were high and we were not disappointed. There is a real magic in the food presented and it was a pity we did not have time for a return visit while in Queenstown.

Starting with the Goat cheese profiteroles and Duck tongues, this set the tone for the evening. Rata is a place where you have the ability to venture away from the norm.

John Dory and pigs tail for main and finishing off with Cinnamon Oysters. A true adventure in food.

Great select of local wines by the glass.

Joe's Garage

Cuisine: Brunch, Cafe, New Zealand

In a town full of expensive eating establishments there is a real market for a place like Joe’s.

The food was cheap and the service was good, however it was let down by the simplest thing. The pattie in the hamburger was frozen. On the plus side the chips were crisp and my chicken was moist and tasty.

Does have a great atmosphere at lunchtime.

Like the reviewers below we headed along for a family dinner (was Gengis Khan the family dinner god?).

It is very much ‘it is what it is’ type place and you need to take it as it comes. We found the food ok and there was a good selection of meat, however the seafood selection was poor.

Hard to judge the service as there is not much required.

Fingers crossed we don’t have another family dinner planned soon.

It must be a hard ask opening a new restaurant when you have a profile as the expectations are high. However the Food Truck Garage delivered just what we expected. Simple, fresh no fuss food at a very responsible price.

Most of the dishes do have a small twist and the stand outs for us were the Paua and Pork dog along with the beetroot burger and chips.

Very friendly and organised staff.

Nice bar with a street food concept.

Our service when we got it was great, however our waitress was so over worked she could not keep up. The place was not overly busy but she seemed to be the only person serving outside on ANZAC day afternoon.

There were huge gaps in each of our dishes being served despite the orders being taken at the same time. I had to wait another 25 minutes for mine. The Green Chilli Dog was nothing special, the chips were soft and lacked crispness but the fish taco was good.

They also have a strange wine list by the glass, where nothing stands out and there are no old favorite backups.

Not worth driving around Kingsland to find a park for.

This place has no redeeming features. Poor service with food that seems to lack any love. Even the tea was bad, it tasted like old tea bags.

We ordered for breakfast savory mince on toast which did taste ok-ish however it was very watery. The side of black pudding was some cheap supermarket type roll and it tasted nothing like it should. The poached eggs on toast were cold and well over cooked.

The staff were totally dis-interested.

Not worth trying to find a park for.

Fill your own plate (small, medium or large) Asian food court buffet. This place had the biggest queue so our thinking was that it served the best food. It does if you like a lot of sweet, orange, fried food which you can pile on a plate.

The sign at the front door said delicious pies.

They looked homemade with great promise but after being zapped into life from the cabinet it all went down hill. Soft thick pasty and while the mince looked good it lacked any taste. For $6.50 a disappointment.

Good vibe with great coffee in a bright airy environment.

The downside is the tables for two are rather small and it is like eating on plane. But the wide range of fresh tasty food makes up for it. The mince on rosit was my pick of the day.

A hidden gem in the top of Symonds St that you would never know existed. The service from the door could not be faulted and remained the same all evening.

Elephant Hill should be a five star restaurant, but the poor service lets down the fantastic food and location. I have even held-off posting this review based on sending them an email outlining the issues we had, however they never replied.

The location is fantastic located at the southern most tip of lake Taupo on the waters edge. Ideal for a beer outside in the afternoon sun looking over the water.

The thought is really there with the meals and the presentation, however at the price they did not make the mark. Both my duck and prawns were over just cooked. We will be heading back however as maybe it was just a bad night and a couple of unlucky dishes.

Well worth hunting out, even if you are just wanting a beer in the sun.

Disappointing across the board. For a place that sets high expectations the results are poor and it worries me that tourist flock to this place. Our local Chinese take-way serves better fish and chips.

The chips were under cooked, the batter on the fish was under cooked and they were severed on oil soaked paper.

Even the service was bad and un-engaging and all I wanted was a beer.
